How To Get A Clear Skin: 21 Tips From A Dermatologist

Clear skin is in! Did you know that the skin is the biggest organ in our body? It protects our vital organs and is susceptible to a lot of problems. There are various reasons why your skin may be experiencing issues. You should consult with a dermatologist who can help you get on track with your concerns. At times it is hard to make the skin healthy. The skin is a complex structure, which requires a multi-pronged treatment approach to improve its condition. The skin has a natural healing ability in regeneration, which replaces dead skin cells with healthy ones. There are various reasons why your skin may be experiencing issues. You should consult with a dermatologist who can help you get on track with your concerns.

Thinking about getting Clear Skin? Here are 21 tips from a dermatologist that will help you achieve healthy-looking skin:

1- Keep your hands clean! We often disregard this as one of the simple steps to keeping healthy-looking skin; always wash your hands before eating preferably with antibacterial soap. Wash after you come back from outdoor activity. Please keep your hands away from your face unless they are clean.

2- Sunscreen is the best way to protect yourself from sun damage! Proper use of sunscreen can make a massive difference in the long run, so apply it regularly – at least 15 minutes before going out so that it gets absorbed well into the skin and wear SPF 30 plus or 40 if you have a very dark skin tone. Even when you think your skin is protected by clothing, it requires protection as UV rays are filtering through them too. When using sunscreen, choose one with SPF 30+ and broad-spectrum coverage (UVB/UVA). You should apply sunscreen generously on all exposed areas such as the face, neck, ears, and hands (The back of the hand is often a missed area). Apply sunscreen every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating.

3- Drink lots of water! Water helps in keeping skin glowing as it removes toxins from our body – primarily through sweat during exercise. You will get better skin if you drink at least eight glasses of lukewarm water every day! If your skin becomes dehydrated too quickly, make sure to use an oil control lotion that includes hyaluronic acid to prevent excess loss of moisture.

4- Stop using hot water on your face! Hot water tends to dry out your skin more than lukewarm water. Use cool to lukewarm water for washing and rinse your face with lukewarm water. Please don’t wash your face too often as it can cause dryness.

5- Moisturize! Many people skip moisturization because they think that it will clog their pores, but the truth is that if you use lotion/oil regularly on the skin and do not wash it off after a few minutes, there should be no problem. Using a moisturizer daily protects dry skin by adding a protective barrier against irritants and pollutants in the environment. The good news is that most moisturizers also contain sunscreen, which helps protect the skin against UV damage.

6- Don’t forget to exfoliate! Exfoliating means getting rid of dead skin cells to make way for new ones, leaving your skin clear and fresh. While doing it, use products that do not have harsh chemicals. Also, make sure not to scrub too hard as you can end up irritating your skin more.

7- Choose makeup that matches your skin type. If you have dry skin, use a foundation that is creamy and moisturizing. If you have oily skin, choose powder makeup instead of liquid. Also, if you are working out and sweating a lot, use waterproof makeup since it will last longer throughout the activity.

8- Do not touch/rub/pick pimples! It will only lead to scarring and discoloration of the skin. Either keep your hands away from your face or use a mask with an antibacterial component to prevent further damage. This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when they have acne breakouts – touching their pimples!

9- Cut the sugar for healthy skin. Sugar and simple carbohydrates cause the skin to excrete more oil, resulting in acne breakouts. Reducing sugar also helps the body to detoxify, which is crucial for healthy-looking skin. Sugar & sugar substitutes are harmful. Study after study has shown that they can be very damaging for your health, causing metabolic dysfunction, weight gain (metabolism slowdown), cancer, and more. Sugar products can flare up your acne and can cause other adverse health effects.

10- Avoid junk food! Junk foods are full of trans fats, processed sugars, and chemicals that increase the risk of cancer and reduce the elasticity of our skin, making it look older than its years. If you must indulge occasionally, choose these over junk foods: – Almonds – a handful is good enough – Yogurt – smaller portion is okay too – Cantaloupe/Papaya – 2 a week is enough – Eggs – whites are your friend. They build skin tissue and repair cells.

11- Get plenty of sleep! Getting less than 7 hours of sleep can lead to skin problems such as bags under the eyes, dark circles (called hyperpigmentation), or even breakouts. When we sleep, our body goes into overdrive, repairing the damage when we are awake. There’s no way around it; 7 hours of good restful sleep is a must each night!

12- Read food labels carefully! Labels play an essential part in how healthy looking our skin will be. You should avoid ingredients like sugar, artificial coloring agents as much as possible. Anything artificial or unnatural can harm the skin when used regularly. So make sure to read the ingredients and avoid any products with these bad guys listed!

13- Don’t smoke or drink – it dries out your skin, making you look older than your years, besides many other health risks associated with smoking. Smoking and consuming alcohol is not just dangerous to your vital organs, but it can also lead to many skin problems. The most common skin conditions caused by smoking & alcohol are Acne, Psoriasis, Blackheads, Redness of the skin, etc. What is surprising is that most people do not even realize that they can use Homeopathy to cure these skin problems permanently.

14- (For men) Shaving with a blade that is not sharp or clean enough will irritate and inflame the skin, leading to pimples. Use a new blade that has been washed thoroughly before each use. To prevent further damage, moisturize immediately after shaving with an alcohol-free lotion as it soothes the skin and prevents irritation.

15- If you have sensitive skin, avoid fragrant products as they can cause allergies or even breakouts! Check out natural products when buying face washes/cleansers/moisturizers to get rid of the problems listed above! Or look for products labeled hypoallergenic instead; most dermatologists recommend using these types of products.

16- Drink tea before going to bed! If you want a good night’s sleep, switch from coffee to green tea for at least 4 hours before going to bed. Green tea contains caffeine which helps keep us alert during the day, but when we drink this delicious beverage about 1 hour before going to sleep, our body will start releasing Melatonin which helps us get a good restful sleep. This will not only make our skin look younger, but it also helps in many other ways too!

17- Exercise regularly to detoxify the body and maintain youthful-looking skin. Cardio exercises are best for reducing wrinkles as they cleanse blood vessels from toxins that end up in your face.

18- If you are overweight, losing a few extra pounds will help reduce or even eliminate some types of acne breakouts, such as those caused by hormonal changes. Fad diets don’t work because most people cannot stick with them in the long run. The best way is to follow a healthy diet and a workout routine that you can incorporate into your lifestyle forever!

20- Follow a cleansing toning moisturizing routine. A proper cleansing, toning & moisturizing skincare routine is essential. Cleansing, toning & moisturizing can heal it, prevent it from getting worse, & maintain your skin at its healthiest. Cleanse first to get rid of any dirt and grime that has accumulated throughout the day! Avoid comedogenic products (those that cause breakouts). Toners help in preparing the skin for optimal absorption of a daily moisturizer. Finding a toner you love using is important because it helps ensure that bacteria causing acne and blackheads do not get inside the pores again after cleansing takes place.

21- RELAX! Stress and unhealthy skin go hand in hand. Skin breakouts, discoloration is – it’s just a sign of imbalance in your body! It’ll get better with time, providing you go about it in the right way. De-stress yourself for better-looking skin. An excellent way to do it is by maintaining regular exercise and eating habits. You’ll thank yourself later!

WHEN TO SEEK A DERMATOLOGIST FOR SKIN PROBLEMS?

If all else fails, visit a dermatologist who can prescribe the right skincare products for your specific skin type.

  • Your dermatologist can help you relieve skin problems by performing detailed skin analysis and prescribing the proper medications.
  • Your dermatologist can help you cleaning any infected areas. This is especially important when bacteria have caused pustules (pus-filled bumps). Because they are so inflamed and sensitive, applying anything other than antiseptic solutions directly on them is not advisable.
  • Your dermatologist can provide you tailor-made solutions. Your dermatologist can recommend alcohol-free products and will soothe any skin irritation caused by ointments, creams, etc.
  • Your dermatologist can also rule out the cause of unhealthy skin as, at times, skin problems are just a sign of other health issues. The health issues related to unhealthy skin are thyroid, hormonal changes.
  • Your dermatologist can guide you regarding your diet and lifestyle changes. Nowadays, a balanced diet and regular exercise help in many ways to maintain good skin.
