Is Psoriasis A Genetic Disease

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that makes the skin scaly, red, and itchy. This disease breaks out when the immune system attacks itself, resulting in too many skin cells on the surface of your body. Not only does the immune system participate in psoriasis, but stress is also considered part of its cause because stress is known to affect the immune system. Lastly, genetics are also believed to be a factor in psoriasis because some people might inherit genes that cause them to develop the disease.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an everyday long-term (chronic) disease that causes red, scaly patches on your skin. The patches are often itchy and painful. You may also feel a burning sensation or pain in affected areas. The main goal of treating psoriasis is to stop the immune system from attacking healthy skin cells. Psoriasis can be mild or severe, and sometimes it goes away without treatment.

In addition: Psoriasis appears when new skin cells form more quickly than usual. This build-up of skin cells forms thick, white scales on the surface of your body. Most types of psoriasis go through cycles where they get better and worse for months at a time, but having one does not mean you’re going to get another. Psoriasis is a non-contagious disease that makes your skin dry and scaly. It can be found on any part of the body but most commonly appears on the scalp, legs, elbows, knees, lower back, face, and palms of your hands. Symptoms include red skin covered with silvery scales as well as itchiness and burning sensation. Certain medications like aspirin or alcohol can trigger psoriasis to flare up, while stress is known to aggravate symptoms.

What causes psoriasis?

-Genetics is thought to cause around 30% of cases in which people inherit specific genes from their parents or other relatives who have psoriasis.

-Environmental factors can cause psoriasis. It may be contacted with poison oak, oak pollen, or other plants that have the same effect. If your father is not exposed to any of these factors then the likelihood is very small that he has psoriasis although it is still within the realm of possibility since environmental factors are always changing.

-Stress is not considered part of the cause of psoriasis, it is regarded as a trigger that causes psoriasis to flare up. Anyhow, focus cannot cause psoriasis.

-Heredity is one of the biggest reasons why some people may develop psoriasis. Psoriasis shares specific genes in common with other autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and Crohn’s disease

-Certain medications like aspirin or alcohol can trigger an outbreak.

How is psoriasis related to genetics?

Genetics do play a role in psoriasis. According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), roughly 30 percent of people with psoriasis are diagnosed with a family history of the disease. Psoriasis also shares specific genes in common with other autoimmune disorders such as arthritis and Crohn’s disease. When skin cells grow back extremely fast, it results in red, flaky patches and covered with white scales. When the skin is magnified by ten times under a microscope, scientists can see squamous cell build-ups on top of each other, which causes the skin to be red and scaly. Psoriasis affects more than 6 million Americans, according to the American Academy for Dermatology. Any patient needs to realize what exactly causes psoriasis.

Although certain factors play a role in psoriasis, it is primarily hereditary, making genetics an essential element in determining whether or not someone will get this disorder. It is also known that stress affects the way people may experience their skin condition. Still, having stress, around 30% of cases are linked to heredity because you inherit the disorder from your family members who have psoriasis. Psoriasis shares specific genes with other autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and Crohn’s disease.

Conclusion

Genetics does play a role in psoriasis as it accounts for around 30% of cases. The main goal of taking treatment is to stop the immune system from attacking healthy skin cells. At the same time, certain medications like aspirin or alcohol can cause an outbreak, and stress is considered a trigger that causes psoriasis to flare up.

What are the other trigger factors for Psoriasis?

Since psoriasis results from a faulty immune system, anything that can stress out this system may trigger symptoms. These include:

-Stress is considered a trigger that causes psoriasis to flare up as it aggravates its symptoms such as redness and itchiness, which can even make you suffer from nausea and fatigue. However, having stress does not cause psoriasis to develop.

-Infection In addition to genetic and environmental factors, an infection may also play a role in the onset of psoriasis, especially if these infections are slowly developing. A virus such as human herpesvirus six has been found to trigger symptoms in patients who are not aware they carry this virus at all.

-Skin Injury is another factor that can trigger psoriasis. Injuries are known to cause an inflammatory response similar to the one that causes psoriasis, which results in outbreaks on the skin. Although certain factors play a role in psoriasis, it is primarily hereditary, and genetics plays an important role.

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

  1. Redness
  2. Itchiness
  3. Skin peeling
  4. Scaling
  5. Areas of thickened skin
  6. Dry, cracked skin

How is psoriasis diagnosed?

A doctor can diagnose psoriasis based on the symptoms, but they may also carry out a biopsy if the doctor proposes. Diagnosis is then confirmed when there is a typical appearance of skin and by carrying out tests for psoriatic arthritis.

What precautions can a psoriasis patient take?

  • -Avoid irritating the skin by using lukewarm rather than hot water for bathing and showering.
  • -Use mild soaps with no perfumes or dyes.
  • -Moisturize your skin after you bathe or shower to ease dryness and scaling.
  • -Keep nails short, filed down smoothly, and clean underneath them.
  • -Shampoo hair regularly, but avoid styling products that contain alcohol until psoriasis has cleared up completely. Use moisturizing shampoos.
  • -Choose to clothe made from natural fabrics like cotton and wash new clothes before wearing them to remove chemicals that can irritate the skin.
  • -Wear sandals when possible and avoid tightfitting shoes that can irritate your feet.
  • -Take care not to injure your skin, but if you do, gently cleanse the wound with soap and water, then apply moisturizer afterward.
  • -Avoid hot tubs and saunas because they can dry out your skin and worsen itching issues.
  • -Live a healthy lifestyle by getting plenty of daily exercises, eating nutritious foods, drinking enough fluids, and getting adequate sleep every night.
  • -Manage stress as it also triggers psoriasis symptoms in some people. You may want to try relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or massage therapies.
  • -Discontinue smoking and avoid drinking alcoholic beverages because they can worsen psoriasis symptoms.
  • -Consider using a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air during dry winter months. You should also get plenty of sunlight every day (without sunscreen) to improve your vitamin D levels and reduce stress.
  • -If you have a family history of psoriasis, avoid getting too much sun exposure, wear protective clothing and sunscreen while outdoors. Also, protect yourself from injury/accidents that bring on other skin changes like cuts or burns, and keep your nails short at all times.

What is the psoriasis treatment?

Psoriasis treatment is based on the severity of your symptoms and may include topical therapies, phototherapy, or systemic drugs.

  • -Topical therapies: These treatments are applied directly to the skin and can be used alone or in addition to other medicines.
  • -Oral medications: Stronger medications that suppress inflammation can be taken by mouth.
  • -Phototherapy (light therapy): This therapy uses ultraviolet light to reduce inflammation and trigger new skin cell growth.
  • -Vitamin D3 analogs: Drugs such as Soriatane(acitretin) work by suppressing the immune system, stopping T cells from overproducing skin cells, and triggering psoriatic plaques.
  • -Biologic drugs: Drugs such as Enbrel (etanercept), Humira (adalimumab), and Stelara (ustekinumab) work by targeting specific parts of the immune system that cause inflammation.
